Military Bands in Parks

The Military Bands in the City Parks, a specia project by the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Military Bands in the City Parks, a special project by the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival. Over the past ten years military musicians have performed more than 150 concerts, attracting an in-person audience of over 250,000 people, and about one million online viewers.

With the continued support of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the city governments of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, the Organizing Committee of the Spasskaya Tower International Military Tattoo continues its efforts to revive one of the most charming traditions of the past: military bands performing in parks and gardens, along streets and alleys, and at other iconic venues.

Each season’s lineup is carefully curated by Major General Timofey Mayakin, Music Director of the project and Head of the Military Band Service of the Russian Armed Forces.

At its core, the project is a series of concerts performed by bands representing Russia’s military and law enforcement agencies. The performances take place on weekends at various outdoor venues and are free and open to the public.

The project has grown into one of the defining features of cultural and public life in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The idea for the event came from Moscow residents themselves, who had long missed this beautiful tradition.

Each year’s lineup features ensembles representing the Russian Ministry of Defense, the National Guard Forces, the Federal Security Service, and the Emergencies Ministry of Russia.

The first Military Bands in the City Parks performance was organized by the Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival Organizing Committee in 2016 at VDNH. Following its great success, the program became an annual event that continues to reach new venues and audiences. Since 2017, the number of concert locations has been growing steadily.

In 2020, when COVID-19 spread across the globe, the project was canceled along with many other large-scale entertainment events. Following numerous requests from friends and loyal fans, the organizers decided to take the project online, sharing highlights from previous shows through the festival’s social media channels.

The following year, Military Bands in the City Parks expanded beyond Moscow into the surrounding region, reaching an even wider audience.

Building on this momentum, the project extended its reach to Saint Petersburg in 2024. Between May and late September, some of the finest musical ensembles of the Russian Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies performed in around 45 concerts across the two cities.

The project continued to grow in 2025, welcoming military bands from Pskov to its concert programme.

This expansion will continue in 2026, with organizers planning around 30 concerts in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and the surrounding regions.

Since 2016, the project has stayed true to its original idea: creating a unique connection between musicians and audiences through the universal language of music. Each performance brings Russia’s traditions, cultural heritage, and achievements to life, while also reflecting the performers’ deep love for their country. The artists take to the stage with openness and sincerity, and audiences respond with genuine warmth, admiration, and enthusiasm.

In Russia, military music has long played a role far beyond boosting the morale of troops. It has also served as a powerful way of fostering patriotism, national pride, and a sense of shared identity. Today, in a time of new challenges, its significance has become even greater. Military music continues to unite people, inspire support for those defending the interests of the Motherland, and strengthen the spirit of society as a whole.

The project stands out for both its format and its lineup. While the repertoire of military bands traditionally includes classical, heroic, and patriotic works, the performers are always eager to step out of the box to perform iconic and cutting-edge hits from home and abroad.
