Go back

The cancellation ceremony of the Spasskaya Tower official postcard is going to be held on Red Square on August 23 at 5:30 p.m.

The project that’s been titled “Mood of the Festival around the World” is being carried out together with the Russian Post which has issued one thousands postcards within the project. Then the ceremony will proceed to the Russian Post office at Nikolskaya Street.

Official cancellation ceremonies have been carried out all over the globe since 1862. In the times of the USSR the first cancelation ceremony was held on the 19thof August of 1922 and was dedicated to the Philately Day.

In 1934 the ceremony was dedicated to the Seventeenth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. During the ceremony two types of postmarks were used, the usual one with the calendar data and memorable text around it and the special one. One of them was used to cancel the stamps that were put in the souvenir albums that then were distributed among the congress delegates on behalf of the People’s Commissariat for Posts and Telegraphs of the USSR.

Several anniversaries of the first congresses of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party and cultural events dedicated to the party congress were as well marked with stamp cancellation ceremonies.

The stamp cancellation ceremonies were held in 1938 and in 1956 dedicated to the Eighteenth and Twentieth Congresses of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, respectively, in the following years the ceremony also continued. Starting with 1959 the Ministry of Communication of the USSR began producing special postmarks with original patterns.

In the post-Soviet Russia the first official stamp cancellation ceremony was held on the 10thof January 1992 and was dedicated to the future XVI Winter Olympic Games that were held in February in the French Albertville.
