The Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipes and Drums

Australia
2007

The Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipes and Drums

Founded in 1960 in the city of Melbourne, the Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipes and Drums got its name after the WWII Tobruk siege of 1941 when the Australian 9th Division found itself blocked in the port city of Tobruk in Northern Africa. The band’s uniform is made up of kilts and plaids of Macleod checks from Harris as well as red jackets.

The ensemble regularly performs at its own state Victoria and at meeting of Tobruk veterans. Since 1988 the “Rats” have continuously performed at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. In 2001 they visited the military grave in Egypt to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Tobruk siege.
