Italian Alpini Will Perform Jesus Christ Superstar Score for the Audiences of the Spasskaya Tower Festival

Go back

This year Fanfara Alpina Tridentina “C. M. Andrea Morandi” for the first time in its history will have the honor to represent Italy at the Twelfth Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival in Moscow.

The band will perform on Red Square a hymn of the Alpine Troops composed by Eugenio Palazzi and arranged by Camillo Fabiano, music from Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber (arranged by Willie Hautvast), Military Escort march by Harold Bennet, Nessun Dorma from Puccini’s Turandot and Schloss Leuchtenburg march by Sepp Thaler.

Fanfara Alpina Tridentina is completely made up of retired military personnel who have served in the Alpine Troops. They come from different regions of Northern Italy, mainly Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige. Despite living in different cities, hundreds of kilometers apart, the musicians manage to keep a very high level of professionalism and training due to the strong Alpine spirit of brotherhood and endless dedication.

The band is the heir of glorious traditions of the famous Tridentina Brigade Band that along its history performed both throughout Italy and abroad, taking part in broadcasts on Italian National TV, international music festivals (in Passau — 1979 and 1986, Mönchengladbach — 1986, Stuttgart — 1987, Mannheim — 1996, Mons — 1998, Berlin — 1999) as well as at the Football World Championship in Italy in 1990. The army band was dissolved in 1999. But a year later, on May 1, former musicians of the decommissioned group decided to reunite, forming the present Fanfara Alpina Tridentina under the lead of First Lieutenant Donato Tempesta. The Fanfara is dedicated to the memory of Major Corporal Andrea Morandi, who died prematurely in a car accident in 1998.

Fanfara Alpina Tridentina is part of the National Alpini Association featuring 350 000 members from the Alpine Troops, both in regular service and on permanent leave.

For Information

First Liutenant Donato Tempesta, Music Director of the band, graduated from the Bolzano Conservatoire where he studied music theory and composition. After specialization at the Army Central Band in Rome he won a competition as the best musician in the Army in 1981. A year later he took over as the Director of Music at the band of the Tridentina Alpine Brigade and directed it until its decommissioning in December, 1999, following the reorganization of the Army Bands.
