The 'Theseus' Army Band from Greece Will Perform at the Spasskaya Tower Festival

Go back

The Army Band of the Hellenic Army Supreme Military Support Command 'Theseus' will bring a piece of sunny Greece to the cobblestones of Red Square within the Fourteenth Spasskaya Tower International Military Music Festival. This year’s run will unfold in Moscow from August 27 to September 5 in a COVID free format.

Founded back in 1824 in the then capital city of Nafplio, the Army Band has a deep-rooted history. In 1856 the ensemble was transferred to Athens and got the name of the Army Band of the Athens Garrison, after the new capital of the country.

Since it was the only official orchestra of the state it was included in every cultural event that unfold in Greece. The band also took part in the Balkan Wars as well as in the First and Second World Wars. Throughout its long history the unit has had many names. Today it is referred to as the Army Band of the Hellenic Army Supreme Military Support Command 'Theseus'.

The ensemble’s engaged in supporting the Presidential Guard during state events, taking part in numerous official ceremonies and cultural events held in Greece as well as representing the county abroad. The band has traveled to perform in Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Malta, New Zealand, North Africa, Serbia, South Korea, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the USA and France.

Since April 2021 the band’s being led by Major Dionysis Mentes.
