The Municipal Police Band of Rome

The history of the Municipal Police Band of Rome began in 1870 when the band of the Municipal Guard was founded. The level of its musicians was very high that is proved by the fact that in 1925 it was them who for the first time played the famous symphony of Ottorino Respighi Pines of Rome in presence of the mayor and the author himself. On Sundays the band used to give concerts in Piazza Colonna which were very popular with the Romans and which Thomas Mann even mentioned in his works.
In 1927 during the Fascist period the Guards’ corps was eliminated, and so the band. It was recreated only after the end of the Second World War as the band of the Urban police, and in 1986 was named the Municipal Police Band of Rome.
The band performs at official events that take place in Rome, takes part in TV programs, plays in Italy and abroad. In 2000, announced to be the «Great Jubilee Year» by Catholic Church, the band performed in St. Peter’s square in Vatican, in front of the Pope John Paul II.
With its vast repertory including classical and contemporary compositions (by B. Bartok, J. Gershwin, G. Miller, J. Lennon, E. Morricone just to name few) the band earned the love of the Romans and became one of the musical symbols of the Eternal City.
