Spain
2011

The Musical Unit of the Spanish Royal Guard

Lieutenant Colonel Enrique Blasco and Warrant Officer Miguel Angel Grau, Unit Commanders.

The Musical Unit of the Spanish Royal Guard was born in 1874, although its current structure, with a Symphonic Band, War Band, and Fifes Section, dates back to 1998. The ensemble consists of more than a hundred professional musicians with academic background. The band seeks to build up its music repertoire into an extensive array of styles and variety, ranging from purely military pieces to the world-famous classics.

Its main obligations are related to the missions of the Spanish Royal Guard, of which it is a part: to render honors to the Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, as well as foreign Monarchs and Heads of States on their official visits to Spain, the interpretation of concerts during the receptions offered to such distinguished guests, etc.

The unit takes part in the monthly ceremonies of the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace in Madrid and performs within the yearly Musical Spring at the Palace program, giving thousands of Spaniards and foreign visitors the opportunity of enjoying the beauty of their music within the unique background of the Royal Palace.

One of the most relevant ensembles of the Spanish Armed Forces, the musical unit has already published multiple records.

The band has staged successful performances in the main European capitals: London, Paris, Oslo and Moscow.
