Temuka Pipe Band New Zealand

New Zealand
2007

Temuka Pipe Band New Zealand

Founded in 1911 in the small New Zealand city of Temuka, the Band laid the beginning of tradition, maintained today during Christmas to perform at the farms over the whole of the wide agricultural district. During the Great Depression the musicians, who survived the battles of the WWI, gave paid concerts, collecting resources for the local unemployed and their families.

Since 1933 the Temuka Band has been taking part in the pipes competitions and contests. The band became famous all over the country thanks to its impeccable defile and fast-moving rhythm.

In the 1970–1980s the band’s leading piper was Donald Bain, son of one of the founders of the band and world pipe champion. In 1998 the band participated in the Australian National Competition in New Castle and acquired a multitude of followers with original compositions. In 2000 Temuka sent one of the six New Zealand bands to the Edinburg festival which was held in Wellington. At the same time the New Zealand National Competition was held in Mesterton, where Temuka was among the six first class pipe bands in the country.
