VIII Art-Festival “Drawing Pokrovsky Cathedral” Was Held in Moscow

Go back

On May 12, 2018 on Red Square the 8th Art Festival “Drawing Pokrovsky Cathedral” was held with the partnership of the Directorate of the International Military Music Festival “Spasskaya Tower”.

899 artists — both professional and amateur — gathered on Red Square to translate their vision of this outstanding architectural monument. The Deputy Director of the State Historical Museum Andrey Yanovskiy in his welcoming speech expressed sincere appreciation to the founders, organizers and partners of the festival whose professional support provides for the high status of the event.

Residents of Moscow and Moscow region, Ryazan, Ekaterinburg as well as Rostov the Great took part in the festival. There were no restrictions by age, materials used and drawing techniques. Tourists who didn’t expect to see anything of this kind also got the paints on. Our guests from China were the most active of all. Meanwhile, students of the Czech art schools and colleges came to Moscow’s festival on purpose.

The participants accommodated themselves by the Kremlin walls, on Red Square and Vasilevskiy Spusk, around and inside the cathedral. The May sun was shining brightly coloring the shaped heads of the cathedral amidst the impeccable blue sky, and the artists were surrounded by the wonderful scent of lilacs which as if on purpose had blossomed for the festival.

The Art Festival is not just a contest. It’s a real feast for all the people who are in love with art. It is attended by the entire families, studios and classes. Children who are making their first steps in the world of art, their teachers and professional artists are working side by side. The number of collective works has been increasing every year. And only the judges find themselves in a difficult situation despite of all their competence: choosing the worthiest among hundreds of authors is not an easy task. Among the judges there were representatives of the artists unions, high educational institutions’ teachers, heads of the artist schools and studios.

Each participant and all the laureates received diplomas created by the illustrator and artist Anton Batov, also the participant of our art festivals. The results of the festival were drawn immediately after its end. Along with the winning places the organizers, sponsors and judges have set up a whole bunch of special nominations allowing rewarding the biggest number of participants as possible. The winners and nominees received 82 awards. Thanks to the partners’ support they received working materials, books, toys and candies from Nestle Russia Company. More than 40 laureates received presents from Alokozay Company which provided tea treat for all the participants of the festival. In the end of May five professional artists are going to attend a plain-air event in the Hotel Baltschug Kempinski Moscow as from its veranda opens a wonderful view on Pokrovsky Cathedral. Two lucky ones received tickets for the International Military Music Festival “Spasskaya Tower” which is going to be held this August.

Works created that day on Red Square pleasantly surprised the strict jury and organizers of the festival. Works painted in oil, gouache and water colors, in colored pencils, ink, chalk, felt pens, crayons and plasticine were dedicated to various themes. We want to believe that children and grown-ups have felt the special creative spirit prevailing around Pokrovsky Cathedral that day, and that the desire to create works of art conceptualizing monuments of Russian Medieval architecture will follow them for the years to come.

This year the Directorate of the “Spasskaya Tower” Festival has for the first time joined this project, singling out and awarding the authors of several works with certificates for receiving free tickets to our Festival in August!
