VIII Art-Festival “Drawing Pokrovsky Cathedral — 2018”

Go back

Every May when Pokrovsky Cathedral is buried in the blossom of lilacs it becomes the object of close attention of hundreds of creative individuals ready to translate into paper or canvas their vision of this symbol of Moscow and Russia. Art-festivals “Drawing Pokrovsky Cathedral” have been held since 2011. The festival gathers everyone interested regardless their age and drawing skills. All the participants are in equal conditions: in three — four hours they from scratch have to create their works using the selected technique.

The festival is a real time spectacle unwrapping right in front of the museum’s visitors and the participants themselves are the creators of it. Carried away by the process creators do not pay attention either to rain or to heat. Ones choose a spot inside the cathedral; others make themselves comfortable in the premises of the cathedral’s territory or on Red Square. The cathedral looks differently depending on the weather conditions and every time this fact is depicted in the pictures. Immediate mood embodied in work — everyone can proudly say: “this is my Pokrovsky Cathedral”.

The VIII Art-festival “Drawing Pokrovsky Cathedral” is going to be held on May 12, 2018. Age and number of participants are not limited. Drawing techniques and materials are selected individually. Participants are allowed to bring everything they need to create their works except for already made sketches and etudes.

Annually following the results of the festival an exhibition called “Pokrovsky Cathedral in the Eyes of the Contemporary” is held in the State Historical Museum.

“The State Historical Museum and the International Military Music Festival „Spasskaya Tower“ are long-time friends. The project „Drawing Pokrovsky Cathedral“ is a unique event which has been held annually over a span of eight years. The most important thing is that the organizers do not impose any limits on the number of participants, their age and professional skills which means that anyone can demonstrate their talent. The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat (Saint Basil’s Cathedral) is one of the most important monuments of the ancient Russian architecture of the XVI century as well as one of the world known symbols of Russia, Red Square and our Festival”, underlined the Head of the Spasskaya Tower Festival Directorate Sergey Smirnov.
