To the Drums Thundering Sounds: the ninth Spasskaya Tower Children and Youth Wind Bands Festival Kicked Off Today on Red Square

his Monday, August 25, the Spasskaya Tower International Military Tattoo welcomed back its Children and Youth Wind Bands Festival. The first day featured performances by four ensembles representing Moscow, its region and Saint Petersburg who performed on Red Square beneath the walls of the Moscow Kremlin.

The lineup of the 2025 festival comprises children and youth ensembles, who won the online qualifying round. Hailing from diverse regions of Russia, young artists presented their audiences an array of music pieces.

The Energy Drums ensemble representing the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region was awarded the honor to open the show. Founded in 2020, these young artists have already taken part in various contests both at home and abroad. Dressed in bright purple outfits, the drummers wowed the crowds with the vivid “Drumming Boom” performance setting the cobblestones of Red Square on fire.

"I have been part of the ensemble for about five years. This is my first time participating in the Spasskaya Tower Children and Youth Festivalб фтв I am very happy for the opportunity. My whole family is proud that I have had the chance to perform on Red Square”, shared her emotions Anastasia Sharafutdinova, a sixteen-years old member of the group.

Next was the Wind Band of the Udelnaya School of the Moscow Region. Led by Conductor Dmitriy Vakarchuk, the ensemble masters an array of genres encompassing classical pieces, popular compositions and war-years songs. Together with the choir the ensemble presented a  varied music program aligning with the main theme of the Festival being the love for the Motherland.  

 The Children Wind Band of the Saint Petersburg School N 9 was the third ensemble to grace the cobblestones of Red Square. The ensemble mostly plays percussion instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone and bass guitar. With 35 people in total, the ensemble performs a big number of compositions of different genres. On Red Square the young musicians presented a music sketch dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Patriotic Victory.

The Wind Band and the All-Girls Drumming Ensemble of the Moscow School N 1770 drew inspiration from popular songs by Shainsky and performed a vibrant medley that elicited cheers from the audiences. Then, the girls of the drumming ensemble shook the cobblestones of Red Square with a vibrant and vivid drumming beat. Young Ksenia Oranskaya from the 1770 School confessed that she was very happy with the performance despite the anxiety. 

To the standing ovations of the crowds the first day of the Spasskaya Tower Children and Youth Wind Bands Festival wrapped up with the performance of the children combined band. 

The Spasskaya Tower Children and Youth Wind Bands Festival goal is to promote the art of military music among youngsters, evoking curiosity in various musical styles and forming a unified culture, as well as revitalizing the youth band movement, defining patriotic ideals and preserving national music traditions.
