Defense of Brest Fortress to the Sounds of Trumpet

Go back

The defense of Brest Fortress in June of 1941 was one of the first major battles of the Great Patriotic War.

As remembered by one of the fortress defenders, after several days of besiegement accompanied by endless hours of shelling there was silence at last. Out of the numerous fortress garrison less than three hundred people remained alive, and no one was to back them down. The Nazi were offering them to surrender, but the Red Army soldiers were saying goodbye to each other and getting ready to take their last battle. Suddenly the distant melody pierced the desperate silence. It was a trumpet playing somewhere in the middle of the nearly destroyed fortress, and this melody was a patriotic march. Echoing the rhythm, the remaining defenders of the fortress rushed into their last battle with music doubling their forces and bravery.

Only nine out of the remaining three hundred heroes managed to break through. But those who survived never forgot about the fallen and about that trumpet player who led them to their last battle.
